Ruckus, the free DRM'd music service on campus will be shut down.
"Ruckus ... was brought to the University last Fall after a committee made of students from Student Union (SU) and Congress of the South 40 chose it over four other services." (Ruckus brings mixed success after one year) Hmm!!! Looks like the university thought it was a good idea to shovel a bunch of money in a hole... DRM was flawed from the beginning, so avoiding investing in it has always been a no brainer. I campaigned against dumping money towards a useless service (Dear ResTech - people are going to file share regardless of how you cripple your own network with port blockages and bandwidth throttles), but Wash U invested anyway.
It's not like people couldn't strip the DRM from the music they downloaded in the first place.

As many of you know, KWUR has struggled over the last few years with the amount of funding SU has given us. Our budget went from 50k in 2006-7, to 35k in 2007-8 to around 20k in 2008-9. Presently, Student Union is trying to pass statute and constitutional changes that makes KWUR's ability to obtain funding much more difficult and threatens KWUR's autonomy. As the proposal stands right now, it seriously places KWUR Week in jeopardy. Student Union Senate and Treasury are voting on the proposed changes this week, and we need as many KWUR DJ's and friends of the station as possible to show up at their meetings to show them how concerned we are.
ReplyDeleteIt is crucial that we all remain very respectful during these meetings. It's understandable that we're all very frustrated and worried at this point, but getting angry with SU people just encourages them to disregard us. We need to let our numbers speak for us. A small group of individuals has been working very hard to get Jeff Nelson and company to improve this proposal and are very well versed in the issues at hand. We would encourage you to let them serve as the voice of KWUR in this meeting, as we will have limited opportunities to speak and they can communicate for the station most effectively.
Treasury will be meeting at 9:00 PM in Simon Hall 120 on Tuesday. There are appeals on the agenda, so the restructuring will not be the first thing done in the meeting. Senate will be meeting at 9:00 PM in DUC 276 on Wednesday.
